Conservation of Naag Temple

Walled City of Lahore

Conservation of Naag Temple Project is a heritage restoration initiative by the Walled City of Lahore Authority in partnership with Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan and funding support from the U.S. Embassy. Naag Temple, also referred to as Naag Mandir, is a Sikh-era temple located inside Lahore Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project is part of the wider “Cross-Cultural Edifices of Lahore Fort” initiative, which began through WCLA and AKCSP collaboration in September 2022.

The conservation work focuses on preserving the temple’s historic structure, repairing damaged sections, resolving water drainage issues and restoring its surface decorations. The project aims to highlight Lahore Fort’s religious and cultural diversity while protecting a neglected heritage monument for future visitors. Reporting from July 2024 described the preservation work as underway and nearing completion, with WCLA’s official update also describing it as an active conservation project

WCLA is conserving Naag Temple with a focus on religious heritage preservation, interfaith cultural value and the revival of lesser-known historic monuments inside Lahore Fort. Due to its Sikh-era identity and location within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the project adds important cultural depth to Lahore’s heritage tourism landscape.
