Barood Khana Restoration

Walled City of Lahore

Barood Khana Restoration Project is a heritage conservation project completed by the Walled City of Lahore Authority inside Lahore Fort. Barood Khana means an arsenal depot, and the British-era structure was built in 1857 for storing gunpowder and other military arsenal. Before restoration, the building was severely damaged, with bulging plaster, missing brick masonry, damaged wooden doors and ventilators, blackened surfaces, graffiti, debris and wild plantation.

The conservation work included cleaning the site, removing large amounts of debris and wild growth, documentation, structural repairs, masonry restoration, woodwork treatment, surface improvement and illumination. WCLA completed the conservation work in 2019, after which the historic building was opened for tourism and included in Lahore Fort’s heritage experience.

WCLA completed the Barood Khana Restoration Project with a focus on preserving Lahore Fort’s British-era heritage, improving visitor experience and reviving a neglected historic structure. The project transformed a damaged arsenal depot into a conserved cultural landmark, strengthening Lahore Fort’s tourism value and heritage identity.
