Angoori Bagh Housing

Architect Yasmeen Lari

Angoori Bagh Housing is an early social housing project designed by architect Yasmeen Lari in Lahore during the early 1970s. Commissioned by the Government of Punjab in 1973, the scheme was planned as part of a larger initiative intended to provide thousands of affordable homes for low income families in the city. Angoori Bagh represented the first phase of this program and was conceived as a model for economical yet livable housing within a dense urban environment.

The project comprises 787 housing units arranged in clusters of low rise buildings generally ranging from one to three storeys. The planning emphasizes narrow pedestrian streets, shared courtyards and small community spaces that support neighborhood interaction and daily social life. The houses were designed with simple layouts including verandahs, courtyards and terraces to improve ventilation, privacy and flexibility for family activities, while construction relied on local materials and straightforward building techniques to keep costs low.

Angoori Bagh is widely regarded as an important example of socially conscious housing design in Pakistan. Yasmeen Lari’s approach prioritized community living, climate responsive planning and human scale urban spaces rather than conventional repetitive housing blocks. Although the project demonstrated a viable model for affordable housing, the larger government plan to replicate the scheme on a wider scale was never fully implemented.
