DISCOs Cause Rs. 171 Billion Losses in Just 3 Months

Pakistan’s state-run electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) have inflicted losses of Rs. 171 billion during the first quarter of FY2025, according to official data. Between July and September, DISCOs recorded Rs. 87 billion in technical losses and electricity theft, while Rs. 84 billion was lost due to poor bill recovery.Despite the alarming figure, performance has improved compared to last year, when losses for the same quarter totaled Rs. 239 billion. Annual DISCO losses for FY2024-25 stood at Rs. 397 billion, lower than the previous year’s Rs. 591 billion. The Power Division warns that DISCO underperformance remains a key driver of Pakistan’s circular debt, impacting tariffs, economic stability, and future energy sector investments.
