Budget boosts Metro and electric bus funding

Islamabad: The federal budget for 2026-27 has proposed a significant increase in funding for public transport services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The subsidy allocated for the Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus projects has been raised to Rs7.3 billion, compared to Rs3 billion in the previous fiscal year. The additional funding will support the continued operation of the Metro Bus Service and facilitate the expansion of the Green Electric Bus network across the twin cities. Officials believe the move will improve affordable and reliable transportation for daily commuters while supporting sustainable urban mobility. Enhanced public transport connectivity can also stimulate commercial activity, improve accessibility, and support long-term urban development. Will expanded transit services reshape growth patterns in the twin cities?
