Chashma Right Bank Canal Project

Water and Power Development Authority

The Chashma Right Bank Canal Project is a major irrigation development designed to support agricultural production across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. The canal off takes from the right bank of Chashma Barrage and extends southward up to Taunsa Barrage on the Indus River. The project plays an important role in providing irrigation water to a large command area and strengthening agricultural output in the region.

The project serves a total cultivable command area of six hundred six thousand acres, out of which three hundred sixty-six thousand acres are located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and two hundred forty thousand acres in Punjab. The main canal has a total length of one hundred seventy miles or two hundred seventy-four kilometers, with one hundred six miles in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and sixty-four miles in Punjab. The canal system includes seventy-two distributaries with a combined length of one thousand sixty-five kilometers, distributed across multiple stages in both provinces.

The canal has a total discharge capacity of four thousand eight hundred seventy-nine cusecs, with three thousand forty-five cusecs allocated to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one thousand eight hundred thirty-four cusecs to Punjab. The project also includes flood carrier channels constructed in different stages to safely manage excess flows. Financially, the project was implemented through phased funding with support from international donors and the Government of Pakistan. Additional civil works were approved through a revised PC One to complete remaining obligations and recommended improvements. Most construction contracts under the project have now been completed.
